Learning how to make your own free icons

Icons are an important part of marketing and of Windows. All windows programs have their own icons, the same as system elements like the Recycle Bin and My Computer. Most registered document types have distinctive icons, so you can recognize them easily in Explorer's listings. Windows desktop items can be represented by large icons or small icons. When making your own icons the resolution needs to be considered, a resolution of 96 x 96 pixels is far superior than 16 x 16 pixel size. A 16 x 16 desktop icon means that the image is 16 pixels wide by 16 pixels high and contains a square image of 16x16 or 256 individual pixels, whilst  32x32 contains a square image of 1024 pixels and so on, accordingly a desktop icons of 1024 pixels appears to be 4 times larger than 256 pixel icons.

You need to remember that the size of the icons can also depend on the computer screen resolution. For example a 32x32 size is larger on a screen size of 640 x 480 pixels than on a screen size of 1024 x 768, for this reason the latest model computer systems which have a very high screen resolution can easily cater for the larger and more detailed desktop sizes.

• Using the Start menu, go to Programs, go to Accessories, and then click Paint.

• On the Image menu, select Attributes.

• Enter a value of say 32 pixels in Height and Width, or any other value.

• Create icons using the windows paintbrush or windows pencil tools.

• Supply a name and save your icon artwork.

• Right-click the shortcut on your computer desktop and then click on Properties.

• Click to change the window desktop icons.

• Click browse for the new window desktop icons.

• Go to the folder containing the new window desktop icon you just created.
